TDEE for Weightlifters: Formula and Examples

TDEE for weightlifters = BMR × activity factor. For lifting 3 to 5 times per week, about 1.55 is a moderate starting factor, while about 1.725 fits a very active week with high training volume and high movement outside the gym. A lifter's estimate can run hundreds of calories above a same-weight sedentary person's because both the BMR estimate and activity multiplier can be higher.

The Simple TDEE Formula

Total daily energy expenditure is calculated as:

TDEE = BMR × activity factor

BMR is estimated calorie expenditure at rest. The activity factor scales that number to represent lifting, walking, work, chores, and other movement across an average day.

A common BMR calculation is Mifflin-St Jeor:

  • Male: BMR = 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm - 5 × age + 5
  • Female: BMR = 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm - 5 × age - 161

These equations produce estimates, so rounding to the nearest 10 or 50 calories is reasonable.

Choose the Activity Factor

Approximate activity multipliers are:

  • 1.20 for a mostly sedentary week
  • 1.375 for light activity
  • 1.55 for moderate activity, commonly including lifting 3 to 5 times per week
  • 1.725 for a very active week with frequent hard training and substantial movement outside training

Three to five lifting sessions make 1.55 a practical starting point, but they do not automatically justify 1.725. An office-based lifter training four times per week may fit 1.55, while a lifter with high training volume and an active job may be closer to 1.725.

Worked Example: A 200-Pound Lifter

Assume a 35-year-old man who is 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, or approximately 183 cm and 90.7 kg.

BMR = 10 × 90.7 + 6.25 × 183 - 5 × 35 + 5

BMR = 1,881 calories per day

At the moderate factor:

1,881 × 1.55 = 2,916 calories per day

At the very-active factor:

1,881 × 1.725 = 3,245 calories per day

The same BMR with a sedentary factor would be:

1,881 × 1.20 = 2,257 calories per day

The activity assumption therefore adds about 659 calories at 1.55 or 988 calories at 1.725. Those are estimated maintenance differences, not exact measured expenditure.

Same Weight, Different Lean Mass

Mifflin-St Jeor does not directly include body composition. A lean-mass-based comparison can instead use:

BMR = 370 + 21.6 × lean mass in kg

Consider two people who each weigh 200 pounds:

  • Lifter at an estimated 15% body fat: 200 × 0.85 = 170 pounds, or 77.1 kg of lean mass. Estimated BMR: 370 + 21.6 × 77.1 = 2,035 calories.
  • Same-weight comparison at an estimated 30% body fat: 200 × 0.70 = 140 pounds, or 63.5 kg of lean mass. Estimated BMR: 370 + 21.6 × 63.5 = 1,742 calories.

Lean mass creates an estimated BMR difference of 293 calories before activity is considered. Applying a 1.55 factor to the lifter and 1.20 to the sedentary comparison gives:

2,035 × 1.55 = 3,154 calories

1,742 × 1.20 = 2,090 calories

That is a TDEE difference of about 1,064 calories at the same body weight. It combines two separate inputs: more estimated lean mass and a higher activity multiplier.

How Much Does Lean Mass Change TDEE?

The effect depends on the formula. Two people with the same weight, height, age, and sex receive the same Mifflin-St Jeor BMR because that equation has no body-fat input.

A lean-mass-based equation can return different BMR values at the same body weight. Because estimated body-fat percentage can be imprecise, the resulting BMR and TDEE should also be treated as rounded estimates.

How Is a Surplus or Deficit Set From TDEE?

TDEE is the estimated neutral starting point, so a surplus or deficit is added to or subtracted from TDEE, not BMR. Using the 2,916-calorie example:

  • A 200-calorie daily surplus: 2,916 + 200 = 3,116 calories
  • A 300-calorie daily deficit: 2,916 - 300 = 2,616 calories

The weekly arithmetic is:

200 × 7 = 1,400 calories ≈ 0.4 pound of energy

300 × 7 = 2,100 calories ≈ 0.6 pound of energy

These use the approximate relationship 3,500 calories ≈ 1 pound. They are energy equivalents, not promises of a particular scale change.

Should Lifting Calories Be Added Again?

Not when the selected activity factor already represents the lifting routine. Multiplying BMR by 1.55 and then adding every estimated workout calorie can count part of the same activity twice.

An alternative method starts with a sedentary estimate and adds activity separately. Either method can be used for arithmetic, but mixing both produces an inflated total.
