Simple TDEE Formula for Nurses
Shift-day TDEE = BMR × activity factor
Use these approximate factors for a direct comparison:
- Mostly seated desk day: BMR × 1.2
- Moderately active nursing shift: BMR × 1.55
- Very active nursing shift: BMR × 1.725
For a BMR of 1,500 calories:

For every 1,000 calories of BMR, the nursing-shift estimate is therefore about 350 to 525 calories above the desk-day estimate. A larger body with a higher BMR produces a larger absolute difference, even when both people use the same activity factors.
Standing and steps do not have one universal calorie value. The activity factor bundles walking, standing, routine movement, and other activity into one whole-day estimate.

Example 1: 68 kg, 165 cm, Age 35

The resulting estimates are:
- Desk day: 1,859 × 1.2 = 2,231 calories

That is a shift-day difference of about 650 to 975 calories compared with the same person spending the day mostly seated. Which Activity Factor Should a Nurse Use?
Use 1.55 as an approximate starting point when the shift includes substantial standing and walking plus meaningful seated, charting, or break periods. A factor near 1.725 better represents a consistently high-movement shift with a high step count and little sitting.
For a day between those categories, a midpoint calculation can be useful:
TDEE = BMR × 1.64
If the selected factor already reflects shift steps and standing, adding a full separate step-calorie estimate would count some of the same activity twice.
Should Shift Days and Days Off Use Different TDEE?
Yes, as arithmetic, different activity patterns produce different daily estimates. Calculate shift days and days off separately, then average them if a weekly number is needed.
Using Example 1 with three very active shifts and four desk-like days:
Weekly TDEE = (3 × 2,372) + (4 × 1,650) Weekly TDEE = 7,116 + 6,600 = 13,716 calories
The daily weekly average is:
13,716 ÷ 7 = 1,959 calories/day, rounded
This is more precise than applying the highest shift-day factor to all seven days.
How Does the 3,500-Calorie Relationship Apply?
The common arithmetic relationship is:

In Example 1, the estimated shift-versus-desk difference is 481 to 722 calories. Across three shifts, that is:
3 × 481 to 3 × 722 = 1,443 to 2,166 calories
Expressed only as an energy equivalent:
1,443 ÷ 3,500 to 2,166 ÷ 3,500 ≈ 0.41 to 0.62 lb
