How Many Calories to Lose 2 Pounds a Week?

To lose 2 pounds a week, the arithmetic calls for an estimated 7,000-calorie weekly deficit, or an average deficit of 1,000 calories per day. Calculate the intake target as daily calories = TDEE - 1,000. This aggressive pace is only mathematically realistic for people with a high TDEE, because the formula subtracts the same 1,000 calories from every maintenance estimate.

The 2-Pound-Per-Week Formula

Start with the common round-number relationship between calories and pounds:

  • 1 pound ≈ 3,500 calories
  • 2 pounds × 3,500 calories per pound = 7,000 calories
  • 7,000 calories ÷ 7 days = 1,000 calories per day
  • daily calorie target = TDEE - 1,000 calories

That is the complete calculation. A planned loss of 2 pounds per week corresponds to eating an estimated 1,000 calories below total daily energy expenditure each day.

The 3,500-calorie relationship is an approximation used to translate pounds into a calorie deficit. TDEE is also an estimate, so the result is a planning number, not a promise that scale changes will match the arithmetic exactly or occur on a fixed schedule.

Start With TDEE

TDEE, or total daily energy expenditure, is the estimated number of calories expended in a day. It combines an estimated basal metabolic rate with an activity multiplier:

TDEE = BMR × activity factor

BMR represents estimated baseline calorie expenditure. The activity factor scales that number to account for the activity level represented by the estimate.

For example, using a BMR of 1,900 calories and an activity factor of 1.55:

  • 1,900 × 1.55 = 2,945 calories/day TDEE
  • 2,945 - 1,000 = 1,945 calories/day target

Rounding the TDEE to 2,950 produces a rounded daily target of 1,950 calories. Because BMR, the activity factor, and food calories are all estimates, rounding the final answer to the nearest 50 calories is usually clearer than implying single-calorie precision.

The target is 1,000 calories below TDEE, not necessarily an intake of 1,000 calories total. People with different TDEE estimates will get different daily intake targets from the same formula.

Worked Examples

Example 1: TDEE of 3,200 Calories

Suppose the estimated TDEE is 3,200 calories per day:

  • Daily maintenance estimate: 3,200 calories
  • Daily deficit: 1,000 calories
  • Daily intake target: 3,200 - 1,000 = 2,200 calories
  • Weekly intake target: 2,200 × 7 = 15,400 calories

The weekly check is 3,200 × 7 = 22,400 calories of estimated expenditure. Subtracting the 15,400-calorie intake target leaves the planned 7,000-calorie weekly deficit.

Here, the 1,000-calorie deficit is about 31% of the estimated TDEE. The subtraction still leaves a daily target of 2,200 calories, illustrating why a high TDEE makes the 2-pound-per-week calculation more mathematically plausible.

Example 2: TDEE of 2,300 Calories

Now use an estimated TDEE of 2,300 calories per day:

  • Daily maintenance estimate: 2,300 calories
  • Daily deficit: 1,000 calories
  • Daily intake target: 2,300 - 1,000 = 1,300 calories
  • Weekly intake target: 1,300 × 7 = 9,100 calories

The paper deficit is still 7,000 calories per week: 2,300 × 7 = 16,100, and 16,100 - 9,100 = 7,000. However, the same 1,000-calorie subtraction now represents about 43% of the estimated TDEE and produces a much lower intake number.

The formula always returns an answer, but it does not determine whether that answer is practical. It shows why a 2-pound weekly pace is only mathematically realistic for people whose estimated daily expenditure is high enough to absorb a 1,000-calorie subtraction.

How Many Calories Per Day for 2 Pounds a Week?

The answer is a 1,000-calorie daily deficit, not one universal daily intake number. Apply the subtraction to the individual TDEE estimate:

  • TDEE of 3,500: 3,500 - 1,000 = 2,500 calories/day
  • TDEE of 2,800: 2,800 - 1,000 = 1,800 calories/day
  • TDEE of 2,200: 2,200 - 1,000 = 1,200 calories/day

All three examples use the same planned deficit, but they produce very different calorie targets. Writing the answer as TDEE - 1,000 is more accurate than stating a fixed intake that supposedly applies to everyone.

How Many Calories Per Week for 2 Pounds?

The weekly version of the formula is:

weekly calorie target = (TDEE × 7) - 7,000

With a TDEE of 2,950 calories, estimated weekly expenditure is 2,950 × 7 = 20,650 calories. Subtract the planned 7,000-calorie deficit to get 13,650 calories per week, which averages 13,650 ÷ 7 = 1,950 calories per day.

The daily and weekly methods produce the same result. The weekly version simply makes the full 7,000-calorie calculation visible.

Does Activity Change the Calculation?

Activity can change the TDEE estimate, but it does not change the target deficit for this specific calculation. If estimated TDEE rises from 2,700 to 3,000 calories, the corresponding target rises from 2,700 - 1,000 = 1,700 to 3,000 - 1,000 = 2,000 calories per day.

If activity is already represented in the TDEE or activity factor, adding those calories again would count them twice. The clean calculation uses one complete TDEE estimate, then subtracts 1,000 once.

In calorie-budget terms, TDEE sets the daily budget, intake spends it down, and the planned 1,000-calorie gap is the amount left below estimated expenditure.
